Joomla uses PHP to create the HTML pages that make up your website. These pages can be compressed using Gzip Compression. Most web servers support Gzip Compression, which can shrink your site's pages by 70% to 90%. This will result in reduced bandwidth and faster page loads for your visitors.

To enable Gzip Compression on your Joomla web site, go to your Global Configuration and go to the Server tab. Set GZIP Page Compression to Yes. That's all there is to it.

{cbauthor}There is a small chance your server doesn't have Gzip enabled, you'll need to test your site after enabling Gzip. Browse to http://www.gidnetwork.com/tools/gzip-test.php and enter your website's URL. The test will tell you if your pages are Gzipped or not.

Using Gzip Compression will use more of your server's processing power. Some sites on shared hosting plans may not be able to handle the extra load, but if you have implemented the rest of these server performance techniques (especially page caching and query caching ) then your site should be fine. Using Gzip Compression makes for much faster page downloads so try to make it work.
