I looked for apostrophes in the
Description metadata field and found two single apostrophes used as quotation marks. This was the text in the article metadata description:
The Manchester Labour History Seminars aim to create discussion and debate between lecturers, students and people generally interested in labour history. The first term will follow a theme of 'Music and the Movement'. For more details email shirin.hirsch@postgrad.manchester.ac.uk
I was immediately suspicious about the email address with its @ symbol as a possible culprit. And sure enough when I removed the address, the code adjacent to the Digg button disappeared. I also tried removing the apostrophes, but then started getting intermittent page loading problems. Sometimes the page loaded OK with the Digg button looking normal. But when I refreshed the page, it would take forever to load and the Digg button did not appear. This went on for about five minutes.
Eventually, the page loading problem disappeared--I think it may have been a temporary problem related to the host rather than the plugin.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
